Lot 138

U.S. 1847, 5¢ red brown (1), large margins all round showing portion of adjoining stamp at right in combination with Canada 3d red (2), both cancelled, and the former tied, by red grid on 1851 folded letter from Scottsville, N.Y. (near Rochester) to St. Catharine's, Canada matching "Rochester N.Y. /May 4" c.d.s., "U. States" horseshoe handstamp also in red and "Queenston U.C./May 6 1851" double arc exchange office postmark which also ties the 5¢ to the cover, the 3d has small nicks at bottom and a clipped lower right corner just impinging on outer frame line, the cover also has light water staining which effectively ties the 3d stamp, a Fine and unique usage Illustrated in Boggs, Vol. I, proof. 77, and Brookman, Vol. I, proof. 23.

Ashbrook notes that "after a very careful examination it is my opinion that this rare cover is absolutely genuine Sep. 15, 1944"

There are three full covers and two on piece usages of the U.S./Canada first issue mixed franking:
The Ishikawa cover 5/5/51 bearing a horizontal strip of 5 of the 5¢ (24) and a single 3d Beaver from Toronto to the U.K.

The June 8, 1851 cover Montreal to New York bearing a single 5¢ and 3d to Kennedy in New York sold in our Como Sale #243, March 2002

A piece cancelled June 4, 1851 Kingston, Canada with a single 5¢ 3d

Lot 139

U.S. 1847, 5¢ red brown (1), full to large margins except in at bottom., fine late impression, tied by Canadian target with Canada, 3d Beaver (1), ample to large margins except clear bottom left, also tied by matching target, on portion of cover paying the combined 10¢ postage to the U.S., partial Quebec postmark dated Sep. 23, 1851, red "Canada" in arc exchange handstamp, piece with toned corner at lower left and tear at right, 5¢ with vertical file fold, Fine, a very rare demonetized usage. Illustrated in Boggs, page 87.

Since the 3p Beaver was not issued until April 23, 1851 and the 1847 Issue was demonetized on July 1st, of that year, there was only a brief period when the two issues could have been legitimately used together. However, the piece was most likely allowed even at this late date, as 95% of the 80 or so post-demonetization 1847 covers were accepted as valid.

U.S. 1852, 1¢ blue, type IV (9), two singles, left with large to huge margins except clear at top, other margins to cutting, used with average #11 and Canada, 3d Beaver (1), full to large margins, tied together by ca. 1854 New-York postmarks and affixed to a small piece; left 1¢ with small scissors cut, 3d with tear, Fine, unique usage.

After July 1, 1851, the combination use of a 3p Beaver and U.S. stamps was against regulations but occasionally tolerated. This is believed to be the only example of a Beaver stamp used with the 1c 1851.

Canada 1851, 3d red, laid paper (1), horizontal pair with distinct laid lines and large margins all around, tied by target cancellation on neat 1851 folded letter sheet to East Cambridge, Mass., showing "Montreal L.C./DE 23 1851" double arc origin d.s. and framed curved "Canada" exchange handstamp, both in red, Very Fine. SG 1.
